Hans Gefors creates a new Swedish opera for the Göteborg Opera

One of the most accomplished opera composers in Sweden, Hans Gefors, is to compose a new Swedish opera for the Göteborg Opera. The première is planned for 2015. Kerstin Perski will write the libretto.

Hans Gefors is known for his operas Christina (Kungliga operan (the Royal Swedish Opera), 1986); Vargen kommer (The Wolf is Coming) (Malmö Opera, 1997); Clara (Opéra Comique, 1998); and Skuggspel (Playing with Shadows) (Malmö Opera, 2005). He has also composed orchestral and choral works. During the autumn of 2010, his opera created for listening to in the car, Själens rening genom lek och skoj (Purification of the Soul through Play) ordered by Radioteatern (the Radio Theatre) on Sveriges Radio 2, received a lot of attention. This will be his first composition for the Göteborg Opera. The new opera will première in 2015. Hans Gefors will be engaged by the Göteborg Opera from 2011 as our resident composer. The roles in the opera will be composed for Swedish soloists of high international standard and the Göteborg Opera Chorus. "Hans Gefors is one of the biggest Swedish opera composers ever and we very much look forward to working together", says Lise-Lotte Axelsson, Head of the Göteborg Opera. "Kerstin and I can't wait to be working together again and we're very excited about this project. Keeping the actual work secret for a bit longer just adds to the fun", says Hans Gefors.

Librettist Kerstin Perski is a playwright and has written plays such as Namn: Spielrein Sabina (Name: Spielrein Sabina) and Charlotte Löwensköld for Stockholms Stadsteater (Stockholm City Theatre), as well as plays for other theatres, including Orionteatern (the Orion Theatre) and Judiska Teatern (the Jewish Theatre). She has also written several operas, Vargen kommer (The Wolf is Coming) together with Hans Gefors; Ärret (The Scar) and Operation Kärleken (Operation Love) with Paula af Malmborg Ward; När jorden sjunger (When the Earth Sings) and Sötskolan (The School of Sweets) with Karin Rehnqvist; and Skriftestolen (The Confessional) with Niels Marthinsen. She has previously modernised and created a new translation of Glada änkan (Die Lustige Witwe) (1997) for the Göteborg Opera.
