The Göteborg Opera starts off the new performance year

On Tuesday August 2 at 10 am the staff of the Göteborg Opera will gather ahead of the 2011/2012 season. Adolphe Binder, the new Ballet Director of the Göteborg Ballet, will be present for the first time.

Romanian-born Adolphe Binder will take on the role as Ballet Director for the Göteborg Ballet on August 1. She has previously been the Artistic Director and Administrative Director of the Berlin Ballet at Komische Oper and the Head Dramatic Advisor of the dance company of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. She has also worked as Curator and Program Director for international dance festivals and the world Expo 2000 in Hanover. On Tuesday 16 August, the opening day of the Göteborg Culture Festival, the Göteborg Opera will be present with performances at Götaplatsen in Göteborg. The concert will include selected pieces from Tosca, Die Zauberflöte, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and West Side Story and highlights from operas such as Carmen and La Traviata. Free entry!

On Saturday August 20, at Götaplatsen, the Göteborg Ballet will dance a piece from Örjan Andersson's critically acclaimed choreography for Eroica, which had its world première on the Göteborg Opera in December 2010. A concert featuring world-famous Swedish pianist Roland Pöntinen will also be performed. Free entry!

On Saturday August 27, a taste of the great musical of the autumn season West Side Story will be given when parts of the ensemble perform a concert at Liseberg.

The month will be concluded with a concertante version of the Verdi opera Attila, with Göteborg Opera bass soloist Anders Lorentzson performing the title role. The powerful Hun chieftain's vengeful wife Odabella will be performed by Italian soprano Francesca Patenè, returning to the Göteborg Opera after her widely applauded role as Lady Macbeth in the Göteborg Opera production of Macbeth in 2008. Attila will be directed by Göteborg Opera First Visiting Conductor Giancarlo Andretta and performed on Saturday August 20 and Sunday August 21.

The season will continue with the opera Salome, the musical West Side Story and the dance evening Leinonen/Franzén/Zappalá.
