Sleeping Beauty.

Dance performance by Mats Ek with The Göteborg Opera Ballet Premiere at The Göteborg Opera 30 January 2010 at 6 p.m.

The Swedish legend of choreography Mats Ek is back at The Göteborg Opera. This time he is bringing his own modern classic Sleeping Beauty with him.

Mats Ek’s new interpretation of Sleeping Beauty was created for the Hamburg Ballet in 1996 and is one of the masterpieces of Swedish dance. It is a timeless narrative that could take place here and now, right in our midst. At the centre of attention is a young woman rebelling against her parents. She does not prick herself on a spinning wheel but rather jabs herself with a first shot and enters into a different kind of sleep from that of the fairy tale.

This is the first time that Sleeping Beauty is performed by The Göteborg Opera Ballet, although the Company has previously performed Mats Ek’s Giselle (1999) and She was Black (2007). It is also the first time that Tchaikovsky’s music will be played live to Sleeping Beauty, and the Göteborg Opera Orchestra plays under the direction of conductor Alexander Polianichko. The work will be performed for schools on two occasions and on one of these occasions it will be broadcast live to five other towns in the Västra Götaland Region.

Sleeping Beauty has been performed at The Göteborg Opera once before as a guest performance by the Cullberg Ballet (1997). The production was recorded for SVT (Swedish National Television) in the spring of 1999, and awards received by the TV production include The Golden Prague and Prix Italia.

Mats Ek has worked as a choreographer for more than 40 years and is one of the most important names in the international world of dance. From 1982 to 1993 he was artistic director of the Cullberg Ballet. As a freelancing choreographer he has created works for companies such as the Hamburg Ballet, the Nederlands Dans Theater, the Paris Opera Ballet and Compañia Nacional de Danza. On several occasions Mats Ek has created choreography for the legendary Russian dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, most recently in the programme Ek, Laguna, Baryshnikov at Dansens Hus (House of Dance) in Stockholm, 2009. Mats Ek has also, alongside his dance projects, directed theatre and opera for the Royal Dramatic Theatre and the Royal Swedish Opera. He has garnered many distinctions such as Svenska Dagbladet’s Opera Prize and the Royal Dramatic Theatre’s Ingmar Bergman Stipend.
