Guys and Dolls

Press premiere at The Göteborg Opera Tuesday 20 October at 14.00
Premiere at The Göteborg Opera Saturday 24 October at 18.00.

With its more than 70 singers, dancers and musicians, The Göteborg Opera performance of Guys and Dolls will be just as magnificent as a real Broadway musical should be. We promise you intense dance numbers, swinging big band jazz and smart dialogues when the Cats team put on their version of the 1950s classic.

The world premiere of Guys and Dolls took place on Broadway in 1950 where it was performed 1201 times and awarded no less then five Tony Awards. In the film with the same name that was released in 1955 it was Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivan Blaine who played the two couples around whom the story revolves. Timo Nieminen, Erik Gullbransson, Evelyn Jons and Anna-Maria Hallgarn are the leading actors in the production at GöteborgsOperan.

This staging has come about thanks to director Hans Berndtsson, choreographer Gunilla Olsson Karlsson, scenographer Mikael Varhelyi and costume designer Jaana Fomin - the same team that created the box office success Cats at The Göteborg Opera in 2006. To complete the team we now also have the successful West End conductor Nick Davies. With a modern stage language the team recreates the spirit of the times of the original and allows this musical, one of the world's greatest, to come into full bloom. The musical is performed in Swedish.

Frank Loesser wrote the music and Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows wrote the script. The story is based on a couple of short stories by the American journalist Damon Runyon, who depicted gangsters, gamblers and nightclub singers, and other colourful personalities around Times Square in New York, in an unerring and entertaining way.
