Sing with Skapa

We have several organised choirs. Also, keep an eye out for workshops to discover more opportunities to sing along with us!

Göteborg Opera Children’s Chorus

Tilo Stengel

The Göteborg Opera Children’s Chorus has a membership of 40 children between the ages of 9 and 12. We sing both in unison and in harmony. During rehearsals we work on singing, dramatic expression and music theory.

Rehearsals

The Children’s Chorus rehearses on Tuesdays at 4.15–5.45pm.

In addition to the regular weekly rehearsals, there are also occasional rehearsal days and chorus weekends. In the run up to a performance, the frequency of rehearsals often increases. It’s intense, fun and exciting work with plenty of laughter.

Performances

The Göteborg Opera Children’s Chorus stages its own concerts in Gothenburg and across the Västra Götaland region. From time to time, we also collaborate with the Göteborg Opera’s Chorus, Orchestra, dancers and conductors. Being a part of the highly professional work that goes into staging a performance gives children rewarding and important experiences.

Would you like to join?

You don’t need to have any previous experience of singing and acting to apply to join to the Göteborg Opera Children’s Chorus. We think it’s fun and stimulating to work with people who have different experiences and backgrounds, and we’re always aiming to achieve greater diversity in our choirs.

Auditions are held each year, usually at the end of spring.

Göteborg Opera Youth Chorus

The Göteborg Opera Youth Chorus has 60 members between 12 and 20 years old. The Youth Chorus is divided into two groups: a Junior Youth Chorus for lower secondary school students and a Senior Youth Chorus for upper secondary students.

Junior Youth Chorus

The Junior Youth Chorus has soprano, alto and bass parts. Sometimes we hold our own concerts, but often in collaboration with the Senior Youth Chorus. We work a lot on dramatic interpretation and explore different genres and ways of expressing ourselves.

The Junior Youth Chorus rehearses on Mondays at 5.00–6.30pm.

Senior Youth Chorus

In the Senior Youth Chorus, we immerse ourselves in harmonies and in what it means to be a theatrical chorus. The chorus is divided into soprano, alto, tenor and bass parts. We collaborate with the Children’s Chorus and Junior Youth Chorus. Members of the Senior Youth Chorus are well practised in choral singing and want to take the next step to invest properly in their singing and theatrical development.

The Senior Youth Chorus rehearses on Mondays at 7.00–9.00pm.

Our aims for the Children’s and Youth choirs are:

  • that they feel they make an active musical and theatrical contribution.
  • that they learn to maintain both musical and stage awareness in everything they do.
  • that they are introduced to different music styles so that they all become familiar with a broad choral repertoire.
  • to give them stage experience and opportunities to sing in a professional environment.

During the 2018/2019 season, the International Choir will perform in two concerts.

The first is in February at Gothenburg’s Museum of World Culture, for the River of Light event. The second is in May at the Göteborg Opera, in collaboration with the Greek National Opera, which also has an international choir with elements of theatre, movement and other dramatic expression.

Om samarbetet

The Göteborg Opera’s collaboration with the Swedish Red Cross began in connection with the musical Kristina from Duvemåla in 2014. Over a period of a week, new arrivals and professional artists came together to write their own lyrics, music and scripts built around the musical and the participants’ own experiences. The aim was to highlight the connections between the present day and the period of Swedish history that is covered in the musical.

2015 saw the establishment of the Göteborg Opera and Swedish Red Cross’ first International Choir. The repertoire was folk songs collected from Gothenburg residents who come from all over the world, performed in new arrangements. In winter 2015, the International Choir created new songs based on themes in the musical Crazy for You. One of the new songs was taken to a refugee camp in Lebanon, where it was performed at a New Year concert with and for children and young people. The concert was filmed and broadcast by the BBC.

Today, the Göteborg Opera and Swedish Red Cross International Choir is made up of some 50 singers; 10 professional artists from the Göteborg Opera and 40 singing enthusiasts who are Gothenburg residents but who come from all around the world.

The International Choir performs during the Gothenburg Culture Festival 2015
