Tsubasa Hori was born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1976. Tsubasa began playing piano and Taiko as a young child. In 1990, she joined the Kyoto Horikawa Music High School where she studied Western percussion instruments and theory. She went on to play rock and study at the Kodo Center for Taiko (traditional Japanese drums) on the island of Sado. After graduating in 1999, Tsubasa Hori became a member of the Taiko Ensemble Kodo with whom she toured in some twenty countries. Tsubasa played other instruments too - such as the traditional stringed instrument ‘Koto’ - and sang folk songs. In 2008, Tsubasa became the creator and composer behind an all-female Taiko production that she continued to lead as a soloist performer until 2010 when she moved to Antwerp. In Antwerp, Tsubasa Hori has worked with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui on a number of productions based on her own research into Japanese music and dance.
