After a brief dancing career he started working in set design in 1976.
He initially designed for ballet, working with choreographers such as Jiri Kylian and William Forsythe and soon for all the major dutch drama companies and more recently for various theatres outside Holland including Schaubühne Berlin, Münchner Kammerspiele, Bayrisches Staatsschauspiel München, Volkstheater Wien, Renaissancetheater Berlin and many other European theatre and opera companies. Doesburg. With director Yoshi Oida he has designed a growing number of operatic productions in France, England, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic and Canada. His recent operatic credits include Death in Venice (Aldeburgh Festival, Bregenz Festival, Prague National Opera, Opéra National de Lyon and Canadian Opera Company Toronto), Don Giovanni (Paris). Recent opera productions include: Idomeneo (Narodni Divadlo Praha), La Nuit de Gutenberg (Opéra du Rhin Strasbourg), Terre et Cendres (Opéra de Lyon),The Pearlfishers (Opéra Comique, Paris), The Pilgrim’s Progress (ENO, London), Peter Grimes (Opéra de Lyon), Yumé (Opéra de Reims). In 2009 he won an Alfréd Radok Award for the best scenography in the Czech Republic.
