Katharina Thoma began her career by studying music (piano) at the University of Music Lübeck. She then started as an assistant director at Staatstheater Kassel and later at the Oper Frankfurt, where during the years 2004-2008 she worked with such directors as Richard Jones, Christof Loy and Keith Warner. In 2007, Thoma was awarded second prize in Camerata Nuova's European Opera-directing Prize and began working as a freelance director the following year. Productions have included Samuel Barber's Vanessa at Malmö Opera, Mozart's La finta giardiniera at Oper Frankfurt, Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin at Theater Nordhausen and Piero – Ende der Nacht by contemporary composer Jens Gert Joneleit at the Munich Biennale. She has also directed Madame Butterfly at Folkoperan in Stockholm. Since 2011, Katharina Thoma is associated with the opera in Dortmund, where she has directed Cavalli's Eliogabalo, La Bohème, Boris Godunov and Il trovatore. Furthermore, Katharina Thoma has directed Ariadne on Naxos for the Glyndebourne Festival and this season, productions at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Un ballo in maschera) and Opéra du Rhin, Strasbourg (La Clemenza di Tito). This is the second time Katharina Thoma will be visiting The Göteborg Opera – the first time was as assistant director for Billy Budd in 2013.
