Joana Carneiro, conductor, graduated in conducting in her native Lisbon, received her Masters from Northwestern University and pursued doctoral studies at the University of Michigan. She is the Music Director of the Berkeley Symphony, Official Guest Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonica Portuguesa. Past seasons’ appearances include the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Residentie Orkest, Prague Philharmonia, National Symphony and Euskadi orchestras of Spain, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Beijing Orchestra, Sydney and New Zealand Symphonies, São Paulo State Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Toronto, Detroit, Colorado, Indianapolis as well as New World Symphonies. In 2004, Portugal’s President, Mr. Jorge Sampaio, decorated her with the Commendation of the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique. In 2014-15 she makes her English National Opera debut conducting John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary. She will also make her debuts with the Lyon National Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony and Swedish Radio Symphony.
