Ellen Ruge, lighting design, was born in Oslo and works as a lighting designer in Sweden and abroad. She has worked on around a hundred productions within the fields of opera, drama and dance. Ellen Ruge frequently works with directors Eirik Stubö, Ole Anders Tandberg, Tobias Theorell and Alexander Mörk-Eidem. Mats Ek is a choreographer/director with whom she has collaborated on a number of works. Ruge's commissions include L'Incoronazione di Poppea and Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria at the Norwegian National Opera, Peter Grimes at NorrlandsOperan, Sommarnattens Leende (Eng: Smiles of a Summer Evening) and The Cherry Orchard at the Stockholm City Theatre, Cosí Fan Tutte, The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Un Ballo in Maschera, Il Trovatore and Stiffelio at the Royal Swedish Opera, Oedipus Rex at the Bergen Festival, and Idlaflickorna (Eng: The Idla Girls) and Som Löven i Vallombrosa (Eng: Like the Leaves in Vallombrosa) at Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre.
At the Göteborg Opera, Ellen Ruge has designed the lighting for the dances Hon Var Svart (Eng: She was black) by Mats Ek, and Boxman by Fernando Melo. West Side Story in 2011 was the time of her first collaboration with Stina Ancker. She has been the recipient of Norway's HEDDA theatre award for Best Lighting Design and is now making preparations for Lady Macbeth of the Mtzensk District for the Norwegian National Opera and Deutscher Oper in Berlin in autumn 2014.
