American born Heroic tenor Brenden Gunnell made his debut at the Göteborg Opera as Loge in Das Rheingold.
His repertoire includes the title role in Britten’s Peter Grimes, Siegmund in Die Walküre, Jimmy Mahoney in The Rise and Fall of The City of Mahagonny, the title role of Idomeneo, Laça Klemen in Jenufa, and Erik in The Flying Dutchman. He made his debut at Glyndebourne Festival in 2015, and was invited to return most recently in 2019 to sing the roll of the Prince in Rusalka. His operatic engagements also include Hüon de Bordeaux in Weber’s Oberon at the Opera Festival of the Bavarian State Opera, Sergey in Lady Macbeth from Mtsensk for Birmingham Opera Company, and Jenik in Prodana Nevesta for the Garsington Festival Opera. His upcoming engagements include Jimmy Mahoney in The Rise and Fall of The City of Mahagonny for Teatro Reggio di Parma, Florestan in Fidelio for La Fenice in Venice, and Siegmund for the Saarland Stattstheater in Saarbrücken, Germany.
He has sung in Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the Dortmund Philharmonic, with Gabriel Feltz, for the Maggio Musicale da Firenze with Fabio Luisi, as well as with Orchestra La Verdi Milano with Riccardo Chailliy. He will be making his Elbphilharmonie debut performing the title role of Oedious Rex with the NDR and Alan Gilbert as well for the Opera di Roma with Danielle Gatti. Following his success with the Hamburger Symphoniker and Sir Jeffrey Tate, in The Dream of Gerontius (one of Brenden’s central roles) he was invited to perform the role again at with the Dortmund Symphony, Oslo Symphony, Rheingau Festival and with the BBC Orchestra for Kings College Cambridge, where he has also sung Verdi’s Requiem. He has also performed Mahler’s Das Lied von Der Erde with the Hamburger Symphoniker.
