Återskapa (Recreate) – Opera created and performed by young people
Are you aged between 14 and 20? Would you like to get involved in creating a performance with the Göteborg Opera this summer?
We’re looking for 25 young people who want to create and participate in a new musical theatre piece over a week this summer: 7–11 August.
Interested? Fill out the form, which you can reach via the link at the bottom of this page.
You will need to answer a couple of brief questions so we can find out a bit more about you. Simple as that! If you apply before 18 June, you will hear back from us by 21 June. After that, we will accept more applications if there are any places left.

The Göteborg Opera Skapa Project
Skapa (which means "Create" in Swedish) is what we call our Opera/Drama activities which are focused on participation and learning. Anything can happen in the performing arts. And we make sure that it does!
What’s it all about?
In August, we’ll be running a five-day intensive workshop involving song, drama, creative input, having fun and meeting new people. Working with professional artists, a group of young people will create a short, new musical theatre piece that we will then perform at Kronhuset in front of friends, family and specially invited guests. We’ll be starting from scratch and deciding as a group what the piece should sound and look like. Recreate will be led by two professional artists: Hazel Gold (director and lyricist) and John Barber (musician and composer).
Since Återskapa (Recreate) is being led by two English speakers, we will mainly be speaking in English, but also some Swedish. We’ll be on hand to interpret between these two languages if necessary. The members of our team can also to some extent help with other languages as well. You are of course welcome whatever language you speak.
Do you have to have done something like this before to take part?
No. All you need is a willingness to participate. To create, sing and perform alongside others. We’d love you to be involved, whether you’re looking to make a career out of singing and acting or you just enjoy a bit of singing in the shower.
I play an instrument/rap/am an acrobat. Can I get involved?
Absolutely! We want to create something from scratch, using the skills of all the participants. There’s room for everything and everyone.
Is it free to participate?
What are the dates and times?
- 7 and 8 August: 10.00am–5.00pm
- 9 August: 10.00am–2.00pm
- 10 August: 10.00am–5.00pm
- 11 August: 10.00am–6.00pm
Do I have to come every day?
Yes. We prioritise applications from people who can come every day. If everyone involved attends every day of the project, it makes for a more enjoyable process and a better result.
When is the application deadline?
There are two phases: If you apply before 18 June, we’ll get back to you by 21 June. If you apply after 18 June, you will be given a place if there are any left. If there are no places left, we will put you on a reserve list.
Where does Recreate take place?
Everything takes place at Kronhuset in central Gothenburg, close to Nordstan shopping centre. The address is Postgatan 6–8.
What should I wear?
You don’t need to wear any particular kind of clothing or shoes. The only thing that matters is that you can move easily and freely.
What about food and drink?
We’ll provide drinks and biscuits, but you’ll need to bring your own lunch. If you want to, there will be time to go out and buy lunch, because we have a one-hour lunch break.
Can we really create something good and worth seeing in just four days?
Yes! Of course the performance isn’t going to last several hours with a huge set, lighting and loads of costumes, but it’s going to be really good nevertheless. Hazel Gold and John Barber, who will be leading Recreate, are not only really nice people and great artists, they also have a great deal of experience working creatively with groups.
