The Phantom of the Opera
Two major Nordic opera houses – the Göteborg Opera and the Finnish National Opera – have now joined forces in a new, extravagant production, the first to be created for the fantastic opportunities that a real opera house can offer. The enduring narrative and music are given a lavish staging, and are interpreted by a large orchestra and opera chorus.
A Christmas Tale
We all love Christmas, don’t we? Well, no. Not everybody. One grumpy old man in particular hates it. It’s all humbug. How can we share the spirit of Christmas with this miserable old miser? Let’s start off with ghosts, humour, human generosity and warmth … Who could resist?
Die sieben Todsünden & Gianni Schicchi
Influences from jazz and cabaret – and Puccini’s uproarious comedy Gianni Schicchi (with one of the world’s most loved arias: O mio babbino caro) are brought together in an inspired and decadent double-bill. The subject: loathsome people. The stage design combines the works into a single tale of excess, disdain, moral decay and sin.
Bellini’s masterpiece is the pinnacle of bel canto opera. A tragic love triangle in a dangerous world of political and religious conflict is expressed through sensual and beautiful music. There are not many singers who can rise to the challenge, but we are proud to present a home team of singers in this production from Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Title role sung by Katarina Karnéus.
Ariadne auf Naxos
Richard Strauss’ beautiful opera of fervent passion and exuberant humour, is an ingenious and playful piece of theatre, that brings the conflict between ‘high’ art and popular culture to a head. A co-production, with Opera North, this new staging is set in a 1950’s Fellini-style film studio replete with film stars, clowns … “and action!”
Il barbiere di Seviglia (The Barber of Seville)
This captivating production of Rossini’s comedic masterpiece went down a storm at its premiere in 2000, with reviews such as: “Immensely successful. Rarely have I enjoyed myself so much at an opera” and “What a Barber! If I lived in Seville, I’d go for a haircut every day!” The Barber of Seville is a tribute to the zest for life and young love, in which the old and the self-righteous can only lick their wounds.
Mussorgsky’s opera is a bold, intense and magnificent chronicle about how a charismatic man manages to deceive the masses. A theme that sadly has not lost its relevance. It’s also an extraordinary portrait of a manipulative tyrant who is himself trapped in the machinery of power.
The Monster in the Maze
Jonathan Dove’s opera brings together over 200 people on the Main Stage: opera singers, amateur singers of all ages, professional orchestral musicians and young musicians. Their mission: to defeat the Minotaur. Three of the main roles are played by three huge choruses put together especially for the production.
This double-bill presents two of the leading artists in contemporary dance: Decadance Gothenburg by Ohad Naharin and Sacre by Roy Assaf. Naharin will develop a new version of his Decadance for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. It’s a tribute to the joy of dance; a playground that allows us to celebrate dance through the ability to laugh at ourselves. Wonderfully ironic and exquisite, Sacre is a world premiere with Stravinsky’s masterpiece Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) performed together with the orchestra. Assaf will bring new meaning to the music while the men and women of the dance company will take turns in the sacrifice.

The exciting result will be performed by the best dancers in the country. On tour to Gothenburg, Stockholm and Malmö.
Carmen (guest dance performance)
Dance piece in two acts by Johan Inger. Compañía nacional de danza (National Dance Company of Spain) makes a guest performance with the award-winning creation by Swedish choreographer Johan Inger. He approaches the story from the perspective of an innocent child, focusing on the violence in this timeless story. The title role was created for Emilia Gisladóttir, a member of GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. The music is a collage of Bizet’s opera, Shchedrin’s ballet and newly commissioned music by Marc Álvarez.
GöteborgsOperans Danskompani’s reputation continues to grow internationally, with invitations from venues all over the world. During the 2017/2018 season, the company will be visiting Sadler’s Wells, London; Luxembourg; Paris – just to name a few. Please visit opera.se for tour dates and programme.
Taube sings Taube
Singer, actor and entertainer Sven-Bertil Taube is one of Sweden’s most beloved artists. His artistry blends melancholy and seriousness with joy and an intense glow. In this concert, he performs some of the most treasured songs composed by his father, the national icon and troubadour Evert Taube. New arrangements for large orchestra by Peter Nordahl, conductor.
Mozart & Beethoven
The Göteborg Opera Orchestra goes on regional tour with an inspired programme: Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
This season, we’re staging Ariadne auf Naxos and The Monster in the Maze, both of which are based on parts of the Greek myth of Ariadne, Theseus and the Minotaur. This orchestral concert lends the stage to five more Ariadne-inspired composers from different eras: from the Baroque period, Benedetto Marcello’s music for the theatre and Nicola Porpora’s opera, via Haydn’s cantata from the Viennese Classical style, to 20th century ballets by French composer Albert Roussel and American composer Elliot Carter.
Twelfth Night Concert and Ball
An unforgettable evening with a concert dedicated to Leonard Bernstein whose centenary falls in 2018. After the concert, the Main Stage will be transformed into a ballroom, where our Viennese Orchestra will strike up with some dance music, followed by a swing band and guest artist. Top off the evening with something delicious from the specially designed menus before or after the concert.
On International Women’s Day, the Göteborg Opera Orchestra presents varied and exciting orchestral concert with music by some of the Western world’s foremost female composers, such as Joan Tower, Ethel Smyth, Elfrida Andrée, Alma Mahler and Germaine Tailleferre. Conductor Ruut Kiiski.
A Tribute to Birgit Nilsson
An epic celebration of the Göteborg Opera’s godmother – Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson whose centenary falls 17 May. Seven of her successors will assemble for a programme that will show La Nilsson’s entire span – from Wagner and Strauss via Verdi and Puccini to Swedish Lieder. The grandiose finale will see Katarina Dalayman, Katarina Karnéus, AnnLouice Lögdlund, Christina Nilsson, Annalena Persson, Elisabet Strid and Iréne Theorin performing The Ride of the Valkyries together!
