Die Walküre
Powerful, defiant, vulnerable.
Musical drama in three acts by Richard Wagner (1813–1883).
Sung in German with Swedish and English surtitles.
Richard Wagner’s epic ”Der Ring des Nibelungen” is the Mount Everest of the opera world. The four operas in the Ring Cycle – ”Das Rhinegold”, ”Die Walküre”, ”Siegfried” and ”Götterdämmerung” – were a milestone that had a lasting influence on music, art and culture. The Göteborg Opera will perform each of the operas in succession, one per year, with the final scheduled for 2021. Last season we began our journey towards the twilight of the gods with ”Das Rheingold”.
”Die Walküre” is a tender love story so deep it defies all conventions and appeases the gods. The Valkyries are daughters of the god Wotan, who carry fallen heroes to Valhalla. The carefree Valkyrie Brünnhilde is Wotan’s favourite daughter. Their wills are aligned. However, when Brünnhilde is confronted with the forbidden love between mortals Siegmund and Sieglinde, it awakens her sympathy. By taking their side, she defies her father in a way he cannot forgive – even though deep in his heart he knows she is right. The consequences are calamitous. For Brünnhilde, for Wotan, for gods and mortals alike. Yet, even in the depths of suffering a glimmer of hope may shine.
Evan Rogister, Principal Conductor of Washington National Opera, will conduct all operas in the Ring Cycle. The director is Stephen Langridge, the Göteborg Opera’s Artistic Director for Opera/Drama 2013–2019.
Environmental conservation has long been a priority for the Göteborg Opera, and the opera house is regarded as a trailblazer in the arts industry as a result. Our performances of the Ring Cycle challenge us to continue breaking new ground.
