Opera soloists and musical artists, the Göteborg Opera Chorus, Orchestra and dancers – autumn 2017 will see the arrival of one of the world’s most popular musicals to the Göteborg Opera. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.
Two Nordic opera houses have collaborated on this original, extravagant spectacle: a new presentation of the world’s most-performed musical. It’s the first update in over 30 years and the first production tailored specifically for the opportunities afforded by an opera house. Supported by a large orchestra and opera chorus, the powerful music will have an even more profound emotional impact than the original. The Phantom of the Opera will be performed in English, with opera and musical stars taking on the roles.
The enduring narrative and music are retained and set amongst classically lavish staging. This production, under the direction of Tiina Puumalainen, is a co-production between the Göteborg Opera and the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, where it met with enormous success during the 2015/2016 season.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s evocative music has made The Phantom of the Opera one of the most popular musicals in the world today. It opened in London in 1986 and has since been seen by over 140 million people in 30 countries. It’s time to rediscover the drama and arresting beauty of The Phantom of the Opera.
Musical artist Fred Johanson has received acclaim in Sweden, as well as on Broadway and in the West End throughout his career. In the West End in 2016, he sang one of the main male roles in Sunset Boulevard opposite Glenn Close. He performed the same role at the Göteborg Opera in 2009. Opera singer Joa Helgesson works mainly in Germany. When he was a guest performer for the Göteborg Opera in Billy Budd (2013), he stood in for Peter Mattei in the title role for Swedish radio station P2's live broadcast.
The role of Christine Daaé is rotated between three singers: Åland's soprano Sofie Asplund, who is responsible for a handful of celebrated interpretations of roles for the Göteborg Opera and others in recent years, the Swede Frida Engström, whose recent past includes stepping in sensationally as Micaëla in our production of Carmen, and the Estonian musical artist Hanna-Liina Võsa, who has not only sung the role of Sandy in Grease 600 times in the USA, but also made a spectacular success of the very role of Christine during the production's run in Finland.
