TESHI|GAWARA
Dance beyond movement and body. A world premiere for Tranquil, created exclusively for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, and a revival premiere of the acclaimed Metamorphosis. Both by the multifaceted Saburo Teshigawara.
“Saburo Teshigawara is an extremely sensitive and razor-sharp, multifaceted artist.”— Göteborgs-Posten
“...scenic poetry which is at once exquisitely beautiful and challenging”— Svenska Dagbladet
“Saburo Teshigawara is undoubtedly one of the world’s most unique choreographers.”— Dagens Nyheter
In Tranquil, Saburo Teshigawara will interpret and be inspired by the season’s theme of the individual versus the collective. The new creation will be combined with a reprise of his Metamorphosis which had its world premiere at The Göteborg Opera in 2014. Saburo Teshigawara is the master of style, “a solar system unto himself” (L’Express, Paris) whose work is both personal and universal. He combines eastern and western culture with a keen interest in dance beyond movement and the body.
Tranquil
In the piece Tranquil, Saburo Teshigawara interprets the season’s theme All together now/a common sense. What calms us? How do we find tranquility? Is it possible to share our experiences?
“The piece Tranquil is a search for tranquility. Tranquility is such a resource of power for a human being. The experience of tranquility is individual. Depending on your situation in life you seek, and find tranquility in different places, in your body and spirit. At the same time it is universal, ingenuous and something we all need. Today we strive to find it within ourselves, yet at the same time it is the simplest thing in the world”— Saburo Teshigawara.
The fact that dance, the art of movement, could be a way to reach tranquility may sound paradoxical. How do you reach stillness through movement? To Teshigawara this is not strange. Stillness and movement are linked. As counterparts, they need each other to exist.

Metamorphosis
Metamorphosis is a poetic, unadorned, beautiful dance piece – based on the body's suffering and transformation. Dagens Nyheter described it as “razor sharp and dazzling”. World Premiere March 2014 at The Göteborg Opera.

Saburo Teshigawara has been running his company Karas since 1985, but has also choreographed works for the Paris Opera, the Frankfurt Ballet, Geneva Ballet and the Nederlands Dans Theater. He has also received considerable international attention for his art exhibitions of video and film. Saburo Teshigawara designs sets, costumes and lighting by himself – a renaissance artist with a fine sense of detail.
