Regional premiere 26 September.

Dance. Eleven of Sweden’s most promising young dancers. Four choreographers from Gothenburg’s professional dancing world.

Together they create Prolog, a performance in four parts inspired by Nordic literature. Among the sources of inspiration are two Nobel Prize winners, Halldór Laxness and Per Lagerkvist, our Swedish national poet Gustaf Fröding and the modern pop icon Joakim Berg from the group Kent.

Watch clip from the performance.

The Choreographers.

Three of the choreographers are dancers in GöteborgsOperans Balett: Israel Aloni, Hlín Diego Hjalmarsdóttir and Toby Kassell. The fourth choreographer is Peter Svenzon, artistic director of the Gothenburg-based dance group Art of Spectra.

Toby Kassell tells us about Utanför (Outside).

Toby Kassell is British and received his training at the Royal Ballet School in London. He danced with Zürich Ballet, Ballet de Santiago de Chile, Aalto Theater Essen, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin and, most recently, with Saarländisches Staatstheater Saarbrücken, Germany before he came to GöteborgsOperan Ballet in 2006. Here he has performed in Aurora, Violin Concerto, The Waiting, Wind around My Heat, Breeding Spaces, Hon var svart (She was Black), Georgia and more.

Hlín Diego Hjalmarsdóttir tells us about Salka.

Hlín Diego Hjálmarsdóttir is from Iceland and received her training at Svenska Balettskolan in Stockholm. After completing her education she danced at Isländska Danskompaniet as well as in Austria and Germany. In 2004 she came to Cullbergbaletten where she has appeared in a number of productions. In the season of 2008/2009 she was employed as a dancer in GöteborgsOperans Balett and danced for example one of the main parts, “Madami”, in Wim Vandekeybus’ Black Biist. She has been assistant director at Zhukov Dance Theatre in San Francisco and returned there in the summer of 2009 to choreograph her own production.

Israel Aloni tells us about Open.

Israel Aloni received his training at Thelma Yellin High School and Bat-Dor in Tel Aviv. Before he came to Göteborgsbaletten he danced with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company. He came to GöteborgsOperans Balett in 2002 and has danced in works such as In Hidden Seconds, Sechs Tänze, Side in Side out and as Alyosha in Re: Tjajkovskij. Israel Aloni has done a number of choreographies of his own.

Peter Svenzon tells us about Tankar (Thoughts).

Peter Svenzon trained at Balettakademien in Gothenburg and has worked as a freelance dancer and choreographer since 1987, both on the national and international scene with, for example, MBT Dansteater/Marie Brolin-Tani, Björn Elisson Company, GöteborgsOperan, Älvsborgsteatern’s dance ensemble as well as with Helsingborgs Stadsteater. Peter has also done choreography for theatre performances. In 1998 he started Art of Spectra where 20 dance works have been produced. In his work Peter consistently explores limits and moves between different art forms, hence the name Art of Spectra.

NUDANS (NOWDANCE) is a seasonally-based dance company comprised of selected new graduates from Sweden’s professional dance training institutes.

The primary goal of NUDANS is to help final-year students from Sweden’s various dance training institutes to take the first step into the professional world. The selected students are invited to spend a period of time with the GöteborgsOperans Balett, during which they train with the company, are tutored by professional dancers and rehearse works that have been created for them.

Frida Lehman, Linn Ragnarsson, Carolina Carlsson, and Sara Edlund in Utanför (Outside) by Toby Kassell.

During the spring of 2009, eleven students were invited to participate in NUDANS and in the performance ‘Prolog’ that had been created exclusively for them. The students were an important part of the creative process for the four choreographers Israel Aloni, Hlín Diego Hjálmarsdóttir, Toby Kassell (all dancers in GöteborgsOperans Balett) and Peter Svenzon (freelance choreographer). Each choreographer created a work for Prolog that was then performed for the first time at GöteborgsOperan Lilla scen (small stage) on 5 June 2009. The production will go on tour this autumn in the Västra Götaland region.
