Out of Mind

Dance. Out of Mind - Out of your senses. Breathtaking technological innovations, touching the spiritual world. Join us on stage!

A cross-genre, cross-border experience

GöteborgsOperans Danskompani kicks off the dance season with exclusive creations by two of the most interesting names in the world of contemporary dance. For the very first time, Sweden is visited by American Richard Siegal and Japanese Hiroaki Umeda. Together with groundbreaking composers and artists, they will create an experience never to be forgotten.

In Out of Mind the choreographers are inspired from the theme of the season; Mind & Spirit where GöteborgsOperans Danskompani explores our consciousness and its possibilities. Reality beyond reality. Mind and spirit, body and energies challenge and forces us to new discoveries.

In Out of Mind is included in GIBCA Extended, part of the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art.

Interfacial Scale

Dance work by Hiroaki Umeda

The intense dance installation of Tokyo-based artist Hiroaki Umeda explores how you can break the choreographic border of dance – and the interfacial between dance and the unknown on the other side of the border. Inspired by tacit knowledge and swarm behavior, he choreographs each dancer individually as well as a collective.

As well as being a choreographer and dancer, Umeda is also a photographer and video artist. In 2000, he established his own company, S20. For the first time he’s working with an ensemble of 11 dancers from GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. For Interfacial Scale Umeda has created choreography, set, costume, light and sound design. For the comissioned music, he is collaborating with Yoshihiro Hanno aka RadiQ – pioneer of minimal techno and Asian art film soundtracks – who has written a score for The Göteborg Opera Orchestra.

the world to darkness and to me

Dance work by Richard Siegal

On paper, New York-based Richard Siegal's If/Then system looks like secret formulae. In real life, it’s a combination of written choreography and a bank of options which let the dancers compose part of the performance themselves. Siegal lets dance come together with other art forms – design, visual art, architecture, music, literature … The result stimulates the mind as well as the spirit, getting the audience involved.

Richard Siegal has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards and is the founder of The Bakery in Paris. He has worked very closely to William Forsythe. In the yearly critics’ survey of tanz yearbook 2013, Richard Siegal is declared as choreographer of the year and his piece Black Swan as the performance of the year. His work Unitxt, created for the Bavarian State Ballet, has recently been elected for one of the best world premieres of the dance season 2012/2013 in the Dance Europe magazine.

In his creation for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani he collaborates with fashion designer Alexandra Bertaut, composer Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch, electronic music researcher from Centre Pompidou, and architect/designer Didier Faustino, whose organic set design consists of organic installation elements, used in interaction with the dancers.

Would you like to be involved in the performance?

Experience the performance from a new perspective: the stage. You participate on the Main Stage in the second piece of the evening. The first one you watch from your seat in the auditorium.

Each evening, a large number of people from seats in the stalls have the chance to appear in Richard Siegal's the world to darkness and to me. Accompanying (and under the direction of) GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, participants will form a number of simple formations and groupings on the stage. No previous experience required.

If you would like to participate in the world to darkness and to me, let us know when you buy your ticket. These tickets are free of charge. Please note that the number of places is limited – first come, first served.

Since audience participants need to form fairly large groups on the stage, there is a minimum number of participants for artistic reasons. If too few people have put their names down for a specific date, we might not include audience participation for that performance. Information about this will be given in the foyer on the day of the performance.

Have you already bought your ticket but would like to change your ticket for one which allows you to participate on stage? Contact the Göteborg Opera box office as soon as possible on: +46 (0)31 13 13 00, or by visiting the box office in person.
