The Story of My Life
A gripping tribute to the friendships that shape our lives.
Music and lyrics by Neil Bartram. Book Brian Hill. Swedish translation Elsa Fryklund.
Performed in Swedish.
Can true friendship ever die? Or does it only slumber, waiting to be brought back to life? The Story of My Life inspires us to get back in touch with the people we were close to in the first chapter of our own life stories.
Alvin and Thomas grew up as best friends, but life took them in different directions. Alvin stayed in the town where they grew up and took over his father’s bookshop, while Thomas became a famous writer and left to make his name. The story begins as Alvin has just died and Thomas struggles to write an oration for his funeral. Too late, Thomas realises the consequences of having neglected their friendship.
As he writes, Thomas gains unexpected help when the deceased Alvin appears by his side. Together they relive the ups and downs of their relationship — its shared adventures, disagreements and reconciliations. This melancholy, playful journey may show us all the way back to friends we have neglected, but still love.
The award-winning The Story of My Life premiered in Toronto in 2006 and on Broadway in 2009.
