Herr Arnes penningar
Opera in one act by Gösta Nystroem (1890-1966).
Libretto by Bertil Malmberg, based on Selma Lagerlöf’s novel. New edition: Patrik Ringborg.
Performed in Swedish with Swedish surtitles, in concert form.
The sea and the Bohuslän coastline are present in every bar of Herr Arnes penningar. Along with the French Impressionists, the sea was a powerful source of inspiration for the composer, Gösta Nystroem.
The story centers around the tragic Elsalill, who falls in love with the murderer of her family, Sir Archie, but is tormented by her dead foster sister, who urges her to avenge their deaths. Nystroem skillfully orchestrates the action, in which the dead sister, written for a high soprano, is accompanied by a saw. He often conveys the constant presence of the sea through the choir, in wordless vocal song, particularly in the final scene as the ice rises and the gates to the sea open.
The lead role will be sung by Julia Sporsén, who enjoyed great success in John Adams’ A Flowering Tree in 2015. With Patrik Ringborg on the conductor’s podium, the audience may expect something extraordinary.
