Screenings of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre

Der Ring des Nibelungen 2018–2021

Performed in German, with Swedish subtitles.

No-one does doom and destruction quite like Wagner. His epic work Der Ring des Nibelungen (known as the Ring Cycle) spans three generations or characters and four operas – Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung – together making a total playing time of over 15 hours. Autumn 2018 saw the start of the first ever complete Ring Cycle performed in Gothenburg. One opera in the cycle will be performed each year, with the grand finale in 2021. Prepare for Siegfried by watching our screenings of the preceding operas in the Ring Cycle: Das Rheingold and Die Walküre.

The films were recorded during the runs of each opera (2018, 2019).

Das Rheingold

Musical drama in one act by Richard Wagner (1813–1883). Libretto by the composer.

In Das Rheingold, the evil Nibelung dwarf Alberich steals the Rhine’s precious gold from the depths of the river. He knows that anyone who forges a ring out of this gold and renounces love will gain the power to rule the world. Thus begins a downward spiral of hate, abuse of power and environmental destruction. But it’s also a tale of passionate love, violent liberation and heart-rending reconciliation.
