Screening of Das Rheingold
The one who takes power over the gold gains power over the world.
Prologue to Der Ring des Nibelungen. Music drama in one act by Richard Wagner (1813–1883).
Text by the composer. Sung in German with surtitles in both Swedish and English.
”Tight, driven and fantastically good”— SVT
”Incredibly gripping”— SR Cultural News
The first Ring Cycle ever performed in Gothenburg had its premiere in autumn 2018. One opera in the cycle will be performed each year, with the final opera in the cycle scheduled for 2021. Stephen Langridge directs, with set and costume design by Alison Chitty. Environmental conservation has long been a priority here at the Göteborg Opera, and the house is regarded as a trailblazer in the arts industry as a result. The Ring Cycle addresses humanity’s assault on nature and the consequent destruction of the planet. What sustainability really means is also a central theme.
We invite you to prepare for this year’s installment Die Walküre (The Valkyries) by watching our screening of the prologue to the Ring Cycle, Das Rhinegold, recorded in 2018. In Das Rheingold, the evil Nibelung Alberich steals gold from the bottom of the Rhine River. He knows that anyone who uses the gold to forge a ring and renounces love will gain power over the world. So begins a downward spiral of hate, exploitation and destruction … but it is also a tale of love, liberation and atonement.
