Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin stands out among Russian operas. Tchaikovsky tells the story of young farm girl, Tatyana, who falls deeply and unhappily in love with worldly dandy Eugene Onegin in such a touching way that it is always performed simultaneously at a number of operas world-wide.

The audience in Göteborg is now given a second chance to see the dazzlingly beautiful production which first premiered in 2008. Inspired by nineteenth century Russian photographs, world famous seet designer Igor Popov has created a fantastic decor and Zuzana Ježková splendid costumes. Jakub Korcák directed with a compassionate hand and Håkan Mayer created dances based on those of the era – from the playful dances in rural Russia to the stricter ones dictated by court etiquette. Together they created a production loved by visitors to The Göteborg Opera.

This revival performance also contains some important additional artists: soprano Carolina Sandgren does her first Tatyana and we bid the Russian maestro Alexander Polianichko, who last performed at The Göteborg Opera in Mats Ek’s Sleeping Beauty, welcome as our new conductor. The male principal parts were performed with great success by Gabriel Suovanen and Nikola Matiši in 2008, and as an additional bonus we will now see Ingrid Tobiasson as Tatyana’s wet nurse Philippyevna.
