Damien Jalet & Icon

Skid by Damien Jalet & Icon by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui

GöteborgsOperans Danskompani goes from success to success. Take the chance to experience a performance in their home theatre, with one of their most critically-acclaimed works – Icon, in combination with Skid, a world premiere which defies gravity.

Every existence is pulled between a desire to rise and a fear of falling. Naked we are pulled into the world. In that very moment, the struggle against gravity begins. In Skid, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani is united in the struggle against gravity – and in the courage of letting go.

The stage floor in Damien Jalet’s Skid is on a 34-degree incline, heading right into the orchestra pit. The human relationship to gravity and the resistance and abandonment bound to it is what sets the 16 dancers in motion. When the floor is on such a steep incline, objects fall and continue to accelerate unless something stops them. Empty clothing left behind immediately slides away. This new landscape of physical possibilities creates a chain reaction of physical and emotional events – dangerous, humorous, moving.

“Everything the dancers do will be different. They will have to learn how to move in this environment, which we have seven weeks to explore. How can we tame this space? What physical story lines will be drawn through the relationship between the bodies and the slope? The human body becomes the crossroad between will, collapse and resilience where alterity is often the only comfort against the call of the void”, says Damien Jalet.

Set and costume design are always essential elements of Damien Jalet’s creations. The slope in Skid has been created by New York artist Jim Hodges, while the playful and multi-functional costumes have been created by fashion designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard. Austrian composer Christian Fennesz provides the emotional electro-acoustic music.

Damien Jalet is a multi-award-winning French-Belgian choreographer and dancer, whose highly acclaimed creations are close collaborations between choreography, costume design, art, set design and music. He has often collaborated with choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Noetic, Icon). His latest creation, thr(o)ugh, was nominated for the prestigious Der Faust award as well as Tanz magazine’s annual critics’ poll for "Best choreographer" and "Production of the year".

Cult figures, authority figures, religious leaders. We create our icons, grant them power, worship them. Until the next regime or culture sweeps in with its own icons, leaving our former idols to be swiftly forgotten. What happens to us and our society as we build our icons – and demolish them?

Just as for Noetic (2014), Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has chosen for Icon to collaborate with the world-renowned sculptor Antony Gormley, who accounts for the scenography: 3.5 tonnes of clay. To specially commissioned music, performed on stage by musicians and singers from Italy, Japan and Korea, the dancers interact with the clay in sophisticated, almost ritual patterns. A powerful and wonderful experience.

Icon had its world premiere at the Göteborg Opera in the autumn 2016 and is a co-production between GöteborgsOperans Danskompani and Eastman. Ever since its first staging in Gothenburg, Icon has gained international recognition for the dance company from around Europe.
