- 12–25 sep 2020, Skövde Stage, Skövde.
Flamboyant elegance with a poignant sting.
Music by Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880). Text by Mats-Arne Larsson.
Performed in Swedish.
At Offenbach’s side was his closest friend and dearest enemy, the eminent prima donna Hortense Schneider, for whom he created several leading roles. The two were often at loggerheads, but their friendship lasted a lifetime despite war, geographical distance and fierce critics.
Jacques Offenbach and soprano Hortense Schneider are portrayed by The Göteborg Opera's popular and acclaimed soloists Åke Zetterström and Carolina Sandgren. Champagne Tears is Zetterström’s directorial debut. Musical artist Ingahlill Wagelin acts as a narrator guiding us through the story. The music is borrowed from favourite operettas including La belle Hélène, Offenbach’s big breakthrough work, Orpheus in the Underworld and his opera The Tales of Hoffmann.
Premiere 12 September 2020 on Göteborg Opera’s Skövde Stage. The production will subsequently tour venues in Västra Götaland, including the Göteborg Opera’s Small Stage.
Around 20 performances running through to spring 2021.
