The Swedish opera singer Birgit Nilsson was the 20th century's foremost dramatic soprano. Her memory will be celebrated the world over on 17 May 2018, since on this day it would have been her 100ᵗʰ birthday.
In Gothenburg, Birgit lent her talents to gigantic productions of Aida and Turandot, which were staged at the Scandinavium arena in the 1970s. When the Göteborg Opera house opened its doors, she became godmother of the house, and could often be seen at the premieres of Wagner’s works.
It has become an international tradition that Swedish singers are a prime choice for Wagnerian roles. This tribute concert will include singers who have followed in her footsteps, here to pay their respects to Birgit — sopranos who have wowed the continent with roles from what has become known as the “Nilsson repertoire”. Here they will each sing an aria, which when heard together will illustrate the breadth of La Nilsson’s abilities.
From the Italian repertoire we will hear arias from Verdi’s Macbeth and Aida, and from Puccini’s Turandot. From the German repertoire, arias from Strauss’ Elektra and Salome, as well as from Wagner’s Götterdämmerung and Tristan und Isolde. The concert will conclude with a joint performance by this world-reknowned group of talented singers – a Ride of the Valkyries which will no doubt raise the roof!
