World premiere 6 March 2020

Magnetic dance at the highest level.

Beyond is a jaw-dropping dance double bill that inspires and provokes the company’s dancers to reach new heights.

GöteborgsOperans Danskompani never backs away from a challenge. Having taken on Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Icon, during which the dancers shared the stage with 3.5 tonnes of clay, and Damien Jalet’s Skid, performed on a 34° slope, they are now ready for yet another, in the form of two creations that centre on control, balance and the laws of physics. Behind the flowing poetry of dance lie collaboration, tremendous physical control and strength.

Au Revoir
Creation by Wang Ramirez

Sébastien Ramirez & Honji Wang

French company Wang Ramirez – choreographer duo Honji Wang and Sébastien Ramirez – often combine styles such as hip hop and body popping with martial arts, contemporary dance and acrobatics.

In Au Revoir, the dancers move between three worlds: one dark, one human and one spiritual. The creation encompasses fighting spirit and astonishing illusions. The flowing choreography, which includes abundant flights across the stage, is in stark contrast to the raw music:

“We hope that audiences will enjoy relaxing away from everyday life for a while and that we can make them dream and reflect. The title alludes to both hope and sorrow. Saying goodbye means acknowledging the uncertainty of whether you will meet again or if you have reached an ending.”

Creation by Yoann Bourgeois

The floor spins at high speed, creating forces that dictate how the dancers can and must move. This is thrilling, magnetic and fascinating dance.

The work created by choreographer and acrobat Yoann Bourgeois has soul and enormous heart. Fascinated by physics in general and natural forces in particular, he employs engineering and precision that culminates in captivating dance poetry.

Yoann Bourgeois and his team have created an advanced mechanical set for the Göteborg Opera, including a six-metre crane and an enormous rotating disc that forms the centre for movement and touch. The spinning floor strengthens the physical forces acting on the dancers and symbolises the constant rotation of the earth, which continues regardless of what we humans do. Of course, the relationship to the rapidly spinning plane presents a risk; however, the intention of the work is not to challenge the dancers as much as to demonstrate human vulnerabilities.

“If we only inhabit places created by and for humankind, we may have the perception that humankind is at the centre of everything. We know that humankind is not the centre of the universe and yet we behave as if we were.”

Rehearsals for Hurricane by Yoann Bourgeois
