Swedish premiere for Disney’s The Hunch|back of Notre Dame – THE MUSICAL
Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame – THE MUSICAL tells a dark story of moral courage and oppression, love and hate. The grand production has audience seats on stage, and the digital set design gives the feeling of being inside the burning Paris cathedral. The Swedish premiere is scheduled for September of 2018 at the Göteborg Opera.
The musical is based on Disney’s landmark 1996 animated film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and Victor Hugo’s legendary 1831 novel of the same name. It is created by the Oscar-winning team of Alan Menken, composer of Disney’s “Aladdin”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty & the Beast”, and Stephen Schwartz, lyricist for “Prince of Egypt” and Disney’s “Pocahontas”, and contains music from the animated movie as well as new songs.
The story tells of the warm-hearted outcast Quasimodo; his nemesis, the oppressive guardian Claude Frollo; the courageous Esmeralda, and the valiant captain Phoebus whose fates and paths are crossed in 16th century Paris. Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame – THE MUSICAL tells of moral courage and love. The deaf bell-ringer Quasimodo and the ethnic outcast Esmeralda are forced to battle for a more humane world against both church and society. ”It’s a passionate evening of music and theatre, an uplifting adventure as well as a tragic tale”, says Stephen Langridge, Artistic Director Opera/Drama at the Göteborg Opera.
“We are very pleased to present this grandiose Disney musical to the Swedish musical audience. Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame – THE MUSICAL is a moving and amazing story, as relevant today as ever. We’re very much looking forward to an exciting collaboration with the Göteborg Opera on this production”, says Casper Bjørner, Country Manager, The Walt Disney Company Nordic.
The set design extends the stage towards the auditorium; wooden beams and footbridges are combined with film sequences though the latest LED technology. There is also an option for some of the audience members sit on the stage itself, as quiet witnesses included in the drama and large chorus. Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame – THE MUSICAL is staged in collaboration with Fredericia Teater in Denmark, where it had its Scandinavian premiere in October 2016. The show was an enormous success among audiences and reviewers alike, receiving three awards, including “Best Musical”.
Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame – THE MUSICAL will be performed in Swedish. Auditions will be held in October-November. Ticket release will be in March, 2018. Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame – THE MUSICAL is aimed for grown ups and young adults/older children. Not recommended for children under the age of 7.
