The first performance for "Notorious" with Nina Stemme at The Göteborg Opera

In autumn 2015, many eyes will be focused on The Göteborg Opera, when Notorious, a recently composed opera based on Alfred Hitchcock's spy thriller, will have its first performance. The principal role will be performed by Nina Stemme, the world's leading dramatic soprano.

Notorious was created by opera composer Hans Gefors and librettist Kerstin Perski. It took five years to complete the work, commissioned by the then Artistic Director, Opera, Lise-Lotte Axelsson. One of the most influential contemporary opera directors, the British Keith Warner, has staged the work, which is performed by a very impressive team of Swedish singers.

Nina Stemme is the world's leading dramatic soprano – following her performance of Isolde in London in 2014, a reviewer exclaimed that ”we will never experience a more perfect Isolde”. For the first time, she has now had a role (Alicia Hauser) created especially for her. The other principal roles were also created especially for their singers: Katarina Karnéus (Madame Sebastian), John Lundgren (Devlin) and Michael Weinius (Alex Sebastian). The conductor is the internationally popular Patrik Ringborg, recipient of the Svenska Dagbladet Opera Prize in 2014.

The music for Notorious gives life to the characters – it is lyrical, emotional and dramatic, with extensive chorus sections and arias. The plot of Hitchcock's film has definite operatic qualities: during World War II, the CIA agent Devlin persuades American Alicia, the daughter of a notorious Nazi, to become a spy in Rio de Janeiro. They both grow attracted to each other, but the mission compels Alicia to seduce a man on the enemy's side. Blinded by jealousy, Devlin is forced to watch Alicia give herself to another man. What is genuine, and what is an act? How much of a person is just the role that you play?

Notorious is director Keith Warner's first production in Sweden. In close collaboration with David Fielding (set and costume design), he has created an epic production, where Hitchcock's presence and the references to the film are very palpable.

Librettist Kerstin Perski, on Notorious:

– Alicia loves Devlin, but how much betrayal and scheming can love endure? For me, there is a dramatic core to Notorious that never grows old: Can love persevere in a world such as ours, where evil gains a new foothold at every turn?
