GöteborgsOperans Danskompani and Portugal's National Ballet starts off new international dance exchange
Today, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani is doing the first out of three performances of Spirit in Lisbon. Next week, Portugal's national ballet company, Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB) is making a guest appearance at the Göteborg Opera with a new version of the classical Swan Lake. This exchange is the start of the European Dance Exchange – a new international project that is going to encompass more companies.
The people taking the Initiative for the European Dance Exchange are Adolphe Binder, Artistic Director of GöteborgsOperans Danskompani and Luísa Taveira, Artistic Director of Companhia Nacional de Bailado.
This exchange will give the Gothenburg audience the opportunity to see the classical ballet Swan Lake and the Lisbon audience a new contemporary dance creation: Spirit.
"This kind of exchange and collaboration mark the future and new formats of production, that permits dance to be what it is: an international artform, produced for international audiences. It enables us to show the broad spectrum of dance-art and act as ambassadors for the art and our regions and countries at the same time. This is a newly invented way to use each other's resources in a clever way to make our art accessible and promote the big movement of dance around Europe, says Adolphe Binder, Artistic Director GöteborgsOperans Danskompani ."
"We will exchange stages, we will face new audiences and we will offer new dance performances to our usual audiences. With this swap between the Companhia Nacional de Bailado and the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani we are starting the European Dance Exchange project, which will also embrace, in the near future, other companies. We are multiplying stages, backstages, experiences and what is most developing the language we all use to express us: dance! Continues, says Luísa Taveira, Artistic Director Compania Nacional de Bailado."
Spirit is a two-part dance evening with new creations by two world famous choreographers, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Saburo Teshigawara, for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. The world premiere in March 2014 at the Göteborg Opera was given a very positive reception by both Swedish and foreign critics. The production has been invited to make tours and guest performances at a number of locations in Europe and beyond. Three performances of Spirit will be performed at CNB's home stage at Teatro Camões 30 May – 1 June 2014. Around thirty dancers, singer Miriam Andersén and percussionist Shogo Yoshii will be going. The Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB) production of Swan Lake dates from 2013 and was created by choreographer Fernando Duarte, who is also first soloist and ballet master at CNB. Duarte's new choreography adheres to the classical tradition while the set design has been created by film director Edgar Pêra. The costumes have the signature of Portuguese fashion and costume designer José António Tenente. CNB is giving four performances of Swan Lake at the Göteborg Opera Main Stage on 4-7 June 2014. There has been a great deal of interest and there are only a few tickets left. More information and images are available on our website http://en.opera.se/forestallningar/svansjon-2013-2014/
