The Göteborg Opera season 2013/2014

Powerful subjects permeate the upcoming opera season, which contains four new productions and one reprise. On the theme of Mind & Spirit, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani and some of the world's foremost choreographers explore our consciousness. In the season's big musical, grand show numbers are combined with a moving story about standing up for who you are. There will be new productions by and with youth and more productions on tour in Västra Götaland county. Today, The Göteborg Opera's program for the 2013/2014 season was presented.

Opera
Human vulnerability, religion, family ties and lost children that are found again are themes in the operas in the upcoming season. They span the years 1762 to 1951, and nevertheless they are united in the fact that the main characters all experience some sort of alienation.

We will celebrate Great Britain's greatest composer Benjamin Britten's centennial with a Swedish premiere of his modern classic Billy Budd. The famous Oper Frankfurt production is set at a British boarding school. Billy Budd is portrayed by the world-renowned baritone and Swedish court singer Peter Mattei. John Claggart's role is interpreted alternately by Clive Bayley and Mats Almgren (The Göteborg Opera) and as captain Vere we see and hear Mathias Zachariassen. Direction is by Katharina Thoma, who was Assistant Direction to Richard Jones in the Frankfurt production.
Gaetano Donizetti's charming and eternally youthful L’elisir d’amore is being produced in Swedish with the two young melodious singers Elin Rombo and Daniel Johansson in the main parts. The director is Stina Ancker (West Side Story 2011). This production will also be the first to be broadcast live via The People's Parks and Community Centres to cinemas all over the country, as part of The Göteborg Opera's new digital venture.
It will be the opera reformer Christoph Willibald Gluck's 300-year anniversary in 2014, and this will be celebrated with the rarely played Parma version of his eternally beloved Orfeo ed Euridice. In the main parts we see once more Katarina Karnéus and Kerstin Avemo who performed the acclaimed interpretations of Romeo and Juliet in Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi in 2012. Amor is interpreted by Sofie Asplund (Maria in West Side Story in 2011). Fromental Halévy's powerful and poignant opera La Juive highlights two Jewish people's alienation through intrigue, love and oppression. As the main characters, we meet the French soprano Mireille Delunsch and the heroic tenor Lars Cleveman. Other parts are interpreted by among others Ida Falk Winland and Dario Schmunk.
The opera season also includes a welcome reprise of the famous and acclaimed production of Tosca from 2011. This time the title role is portrayed by The Göteborg Opera's own soprano Annalena Persson, who is currently having a great success as Isolde in Tristan & Isolde.

Dance
During the upcoming dance season, contemporary dance is interwoven with visual arts, architecture, music and theatre. On the theme of Mind & Spirit, our consciousness and its possibilities is explored by some of the foremost choreographers and designers of today.

During the first dance evening of the season, Out of Mind, two talents are united - American-born Richard Siegal and Hiroaki Umeda from Japan. Based on this season's theme, they are both creating new works for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. Richard Siegal involves the audience in his creation, which flows across the stage, into the auditorium and into the foyer. Hiroaki Umeda's works are both minimalist and radical, subtle and violent at the same time.

Two masters from different generations are responsible for the second great dance program of the season, Spirit. The works of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Belgium) can contain everything from profound spirituality to a sense of wit. His oeuvres have been characterised by many years of involvement in the Belgian Les Ballets C de la B - world famous for its innovative dance. Saburo Teshigawara (Japan) has been awarded the foremost honours both in his own country and internationally. The music in his creation Metamorphosis will consist of newly composed electronic music and two choral works with a capella singing. Both pieces are created for the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.

The season presents a reprise of Homeland? – one of The Göteborg Opera's most acclaimed and well-attended dance programs. In December 2013, there will be a new opportunity to see Untitled Black by Sharon Eyal/Gai Behar and Mama I'm Coming Home by Guy Weizman/Roni Haver.

Northern (de)Lights is a series of miniature choreographies by some of Northern Europe's most prominent choreographers: Ingun Bjørnsgard (Norway), Felix Landerer (Germany) and Charlotta Öfverholm (Sweden) - created directly for the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani and with the premiere on the Small stage.

Thanks to an artistic exchange, a newly created, classical version of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece Swan Lake with the National Ballet of Portugal Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB) will be performed in June 2014. In return, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani will visit CNB's home stage in Portugal with the program Spirit.

Youth
For children and young people, this season presents a work to order, in a completely new genre - opera musical. The Göteborg Opera's house composer Malin Hülphers has created Lasse Majas Detektivbyrå: The Opera Mystery, based on the popular detective stories by Martin Widmark. The Göteborg Opera Children's Chorus and The Göteborg Opera Treble Chorus, led by Ida Rosén Hamrå, both hold their own guest performances and collaborate on The Göteborg Opera's stages. The Story Foyer continues with new, admission-free performances.

Musical
Feather boas and high-heels are the order of the day once the entire stage has been transformed into the nightclub, La Cage aux Folles. Mikael Samuelson, familiar to the Swedes for Phantom of the Opera, is back on the musical stage on which he now takes on the role of drag show artist, Zaza. His partner, nightclub owner and master of ceremonies, Georges, is interpreted by popular Hans Josefsson. The production is made in collaboration with Oscarsteatern in Stockholm. The director is Bo Hermansson, who with over 40 years in the industry has given us both beloved television series and acclaimed musical productions. Roland Söderberg adapts Lehna Edvall's set design to the larger stage at The Göteborg Opera. When Nick Davies raises the baton for this enchanting show, there will be even more "cagelles" in the ensemble and more musicians in the orchestra pit.

The musical Carmencita Rockefeller is based on a true story about a hairdresser who through sophisticated fraud ripped the shirt of the southern Swedish society in the 70s. The production is made in collaboration with the Malmö Opera and the Helsingborg City Theatre and is performed at The Göteborg Opera Skövde Stage, the Small stage and on tour in Västra Götaland county. The main role is played by Anna-Maria Hallgarn. Direction, script and lyrics are by Richard Bergqvist, who most recently made the successful production of Mozart's The Magic Flute at The Göteborg Opera.

Concerts
Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3 in D minor - the longest in the entire symphonic repertoire, will be the autumn concert of the season, with Katarina Karnéus as soloist and Patrik Ringborg as conductor.
