Rusalka

Antonín Dvořák's Czech national opera Rusalka is a lyric fairytale for adults filled with beautiful music and the mysticism of the natural world, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. It is now being performed for the first time in Gothenburg with soprano Elisabet Strid – who has interpreted the role at several of the world's opera houses – in the title role.

Rusalka, a water nymph, longs to live her life above the water's surface. At the price of her ability to speak, she leaves her supernatural world and enters that of humans, to be united there with the prince she desires. Her new reality proves to be cruel and Rusalka soon falls victim to human treachery. Her admission into the world above the water's surface ends in tragedy.

Rusalka is being performed increasingly frequently on stages around the world. Alongside Bedřich Smetanas Brudköpet and Leoš Janáceks Jenufa it has become the most popular Czech opera of all.

The artistic team led by The Göteborg Opera's First Director David Radok offers a visually vertiginous journey down into the precipitous depths of human nature. The orchestra is led by conductor Olof Henzold, the stage sets were designed by Lars-Åke Thessman and the costumes by Ann-Mari Anttila.

With Rusalka, soprano Elisabet Strid is playing her first role at The Göteborg Opera while also being on the brink of an international career. Her prince is Austrian tenor Nikolai Schukoff. The foreign princess is played by Annalena Persson, the Water Goblin by Anders Lorentzon and the three water nymphs by Mia Karlsson, Eva-Lotta Ohlsson and Erika Sax. We see and hear Susanne Resmark playing the witch.
