I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues)
The Göteborg Opera opens the season with I Capuleti e i Montecchi – the popular variation on Romeo and Juliet by the composer Vincenzo Bellini. The roles of the two lovers are played by Katarina Karnéus and Kerstin Avemo, two opera singers who have achieved national and international success. The opera will be performed in two concertante performances where the focus will be directed entirely on the music and singing.
I Capuleti e i Montecchi was one of Vincenzo Bellini’s first successes. Over recent decades this work has become popular on the opera stages of the continent, but it has not been played in Gothenburg ever since a German guest performance of 1837. The opera is based directly on the Italian sources Shakespeare also used relating to the two star-crossed lovers from Verona. The title alludes to the names of the two families – Capulet and Montague. This is the first time The Göteborg Opera is performing a work by Bellini, who, with his long, deliciously melancholic vocal and orchestral passages, has been described as the “Chopin of song”.
The international mezzo-soprano Katarina Karnéus, who sings Romeo Montecchi, is appearing in her first role as a soloist under the auspices of The Göteborg Opera. Katarina has appeared on the world’s greatest opera stages and concert platforms, including several roles at the Metropolitan in New York. She had her Swedish debut at The Göteborg Opera in 2002 in Der Rosenkavalier, with a return performance in 2011 in Alcina. Coloratura Kerstin Avemo, who also has many national and international successes to her name, not least at The Göteborg Opera as Lucia di Lammermoor in 2011, returns to us in the role of Giulietta Capuleti. In the other roles we see Karl Rombo, whom we saw and heard in La Traviata and Sömnkliniken at The Göteborg Opera, as well as the company’s own soloists Markus Schwartz and Mats Persson. The Göteborg Opera Orchestra and Chorus are conducted by guest principal conductor Giancarlo Andretta.
Two perfomances Friday 17 and Sunday 19 August 2012
