The Göteborg Opera's Thaïs selected for Plácido Domingo's own opera and concert festival
The Göteborg Opera production of Thaïs continues on its international triumphal progress. Thursday, 25 October, Thaïs will open the first edition of Plácido Domingo's own festival of opera and concerts in Seville; last spring it was performed at the opera house in Valencia with Plácido Domingo and Swedish soprano Malin Byström in the principal roles. After Spain, the Finnish National Opera awaits.
In 2010, the opera Thaïs by Jules Massenet had its première at The Göteborg Opera where the production was a major success with both critics and audience. In the summer of that same year, The Göteborg Opera's Head of Planning, Mats Andersson, received a fax from the opera house in Valencia which wanted to hire the production after opera singer, Plácido Domingo, had been among the people who had seen a video recording of a performance. Valencia wanted soloist, Malin Byström, whose home stage is at The Göteborg Opera, to be included, and the team from Göteborg including director, Nicola Raab, stage and costume designer, Johann Engels and lighting designer, Linus Fellbom. Thaïs had its première in Valencia in spring 2012. The production was praised highly by critics and audience alike and, in the media, Plácido Domingo was full of praise for his Swedish colleagues. Now, Thaïs has been selected by the Maestro himself to open the first edition of the Plácido Domingo Festival in Seville, where it is being presented as a co-production with The Göteborg Opera and the Finnish National Opera. At the start of next year, Helsinki awaits.
In Seville, Plácido Domingo, as in Valencia, will play the role of Athanaël but the title role will be played by Nino Machaidze. In Helsinki, the roles will be played by soloists Sabina Cvilak and Jaakko Kortekangas. The team from the Gothenburg production are behind the performances in both Seville and Helsinki.
The Plácido Domingo Festival will take place between 25 October and 3 November 2012 in Seville and Malaga in Spain. This is the first time the festival is being held and, in addition to opening the festival on 25 October, Thaïs will also be performed on 28 and 31 October in Seville.
Malin Byström will next be coming to The Göteborg Opera in spring 2013 to play the role of Maria Boccanegra (Amelia) in Guiseppe Verdi's opera Simon Boccanegra (première 6 April 2013).
