The Göteborg Ballet is now GöteborgsOperans Danskompani
To reflect our modern dance repertoire, The Göteborg Ballet has now changed its name to GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. During the coming season we will be taking physical and aesthetical risks, challenging genres and getting close to our audiences both in and outside the opera house.
-The name has been changed to meet the reality of us being a contemporary dance company. We will create performing arts of our epoch for people of today. Our artistic vision and work is about taking aesthetic and physical risks, as well as breaking down the barriers to our public and those between dance and other art forms, between art and life says Adolphe Binder, Artistic Director Dance at The Göteborg Opera.
The largest dance company in the Nordic region with dancers from across the globe
GöteborgsOperans Danskompani is the largest in the Nordic region with dancers from more than 16 different countries. In recent years the company has earned itself an excellent international reputation and is currently considered one of Europe's finest modern dance companies. During the 2012/2013 season, we will again be welcoming new dancers and during the autumn eight more dancers will guest as artists in residence. Several international tours and guest performances are planned – we will shortly be attending one of the world's most important dance exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Germany and later in the autumn we are guests in Bruges, Belgium. Next spring will see us performing at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, USA.
Dance in unexpected places – close to our audience
During the year GöteborgsOperans Danskompani will also pop up in unexpected places: in the open air, at clubs and maybe even in your backyard. After Dance Party A meeting place for dance enthusiasts with a DJ and live music, this event was very popular last season and will remain a regular feature in our foyer.
Homeland & Risk zones – the theme for this season
For the first time ever, the Göteborg Opera dance season has a theme, to which all of the season's performances will relate. We explore topics such as belonging, roots, identity, alienation and nostalgia for home. And as for the risk zones, how can we approach these without fear? In connection with the performances, we will arrange open talks to establish links with the theme. This season will be dedicated to exploration and revelations.
In the 2012/2013 season we will make way for beauty, eccentricity, realism and surrealism. Behind our creations are choreographers, musicians and artists who dare to venture into the unknown and challenge accepted genres. Several of them are first-time guests in Sweden. The first première of the autumn season Homeland? is a dance programme in two acts, each created by two teams: Sharon Eyal/Gai Behar and Guy Weizman/Roni Haver, respectively. DJ Ori Lichtik will perform live in the first half – Untitled – while in the second half Mama I'm coming home, the music is provided by a live band. Timo Nieminen will perform as both actor and vocalist. Just before Christmas there will be another opportunity to see Alexander Ekman/ Medhi Walerski’s La La Land and Jo Strømgren’s Outskirts – two dance programmes which have been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. Along with a brand-new creation by Fernando Melo, these performances make up a humorous evening of dance – crazy miXmas. In spring 2013 we will be celebrating the centenary of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring with two of the foremost versions for the dance stage: Canadian choreographer Marie Chouinard’s The Rite of Spring and Le Sacre du Printemps created by legendary Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
