SvD Opera Award to choreographer Örjan Andersson
Choreographer Örjan Andersson is being presented with the Svenska Dagbladet Opera Award this year, for choreographing productions such as Eroica which he created directly for the the Göteborg Opera Ballet in 2010. Pieces from Eroica are being performed at Gothenburg's Götaplatsen during the Göteborg Kulturkalas cultural festival, with the Göteborg Opera Ballet and pianist Roland Pöntinen.
The jury's citation: "Örjan Andersson is being presented with the SvD Opera Award 2011 for an impressive multifaceted season. As a choreographer, he shows mastery of both intricate expression and spatial dynamics. With musical integrity, he allows the dancers of the Göteborg Opera to chisel out free voices for Beethoven's piano variations - sensitively and poignantly. The creation story, Seven Clues, at the Skåne Dance Theatre is an emotionally saturated explosion of power. Örjan Andersson finds his own way through Sven-David Sandström's richly contrasting symphonic music, while at the same time re-establishing links with dance's recent past." On the jury: Kaj Schueler, Karin Helander, Gunilla Jensen, Bo Löfvendahl, Margaretha Schön, Erik Wallrup, Anna Ångström. The Opera Award comprises SEK 25,000 and was first presented in 1977, to Erik Sædén. Most recent award-winners: Malin Byström 2010, Michael Weinius 2009, Mats Ek 2008, Maria Sundqvist 2007, Bounce 2006.
On 20 August at 7.15 pm at Götaplatsen, the Göteborg Opera Ballet will be dancing an extract from Örjan Andersson's choreography for Eroica, which had its world première at the Göteborg Opera in December 2010. Swedish world-renowned pianist Roland Pöntinen will be taking his place at the piano, playing Beethoven's 32 Variations in C Minor. "Music and dance in perfect symbiosis" was what local newspaper Göteborgs-Posten wrote in its review. After the Eroica suite, Roland Pöntinen will play two solo pieces by Liszt and Wagner.
