Katarina Karnéus - new soloist at the Göteborg Opera.
At 11 am this morning, it was announced during a press conference at the Göteborg Opera that mezzo-soprano Katarina Karnéus has signed a five-season contract with the Göteborg Opera.
This is the first time Katarina Karnéus has made such a commitment. "When they offered it to me I accepted without a moment of hesitation. It feels fantastic to be able to work with an opera house of such a high international standard as that of the Göteborg Opera - and be able to be in Sweden! The Göteborg Opera is an opera house which will challenge me in my development as an artist," says Katarina Karnéus, who will be based in Göteborg from 2012 onwards.
Katarina Karnéus was born in Stockholm and has performed at leading opera and concert houses all around the world. In 1995, she won the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. In 1999, she made her début at the Met, where she has since performed several roles. Other opera houses where Katarina Karnéus has performed include Covent Garden, Bayerische Staatsoper, La Monnaie Opera, Deutsche Oper and the Glyndebourne Festival. Her Swedish début took place in 2002, when she performed Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier at the Göteborg Opera, a role for which she was awarded the Opera Magazine Award. Katarina's début at the Royal Swedish Opera took place in 2009, when she played the title role in Xerxes. In 2011, she performed the role of Ruggiero in Alcina at the Göteborg Opera. "The goal of the Göteborg Opera is to become one of the leading opera houses in Northern Europe. Our very successful productions of the last few years have brought us very close to our goal. Our contract with Katarina Karnéus is another important step on the way. We are extremely pleased that she has been attracted to the brilliance of the Göteborg Opera and chosen to make a commitment to us," says Peter Hansson, CEO.
