The Göteborg Ballet brings success production to Lyon
The Göteborg Ballet will now for the first time perform the triple bill 3xBoléro in France. Première at la Maison de la Danse, Lyon, the 19th of January.
The Göteborg Ballet is the largest contemporary dance company in the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland). Since Johannes Öhman became the Artistic Director in 2007, the scope for the company has been clear – to be a European spearhead within contemporary dance. With his first production, 3xBoléro, Johannes Öhman proved his point. It became the most talked about dance performance in Sweden in 2008 and sold out every show, also on the tours that followed. When The Göteborg Ballet now visits la Maison de la Danse in Lyon for the first time, they bring their success saga with them.
The performance shows three Nordic choreographer’s very different interpretations of Maurice Ravél’s classical masterpiece Boléro. Swedish Johan Inger, former Artistic Director of the Cullberg Ballet, starts the evening with Walking Mad, a playful yet serious take on the relationship beteween a man and woman. He is followed by Finnish Kenneth Kvarnström who created OreloB in collaboration with Swedish haute couture designer Helena Hörstedt and rock composer Junta Rintamäkki. The result is a suggestive, sculptural creation set to a heavy, hypnotic beat.
The evening’s finale is a delirious counterpoint to the first two pieces. The young Swedish star choreographer Alexander Ekman is the creator of Episode 17, a humoristic, high energy choreography, combining slapstick comedy and dance. “Episode 17 confirms that this company can do anything” concluded The Boston Globe when the Swedish company performed at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in 2010.
The Göteborg Ballet will give six performances at la Maison de la Danse between the 19th and 23rd of January. Tickets are available at www.maisondeladanse.com Press images can be found on: opera.se/press/bilder/3xbolero-2008-2009/
