Première at The Göteborg Opera Saturday November 20 at 6 pm
The Göteborg Opera production of this drama of the power struggles and romantic intrigues among the 16th-century Spanish royal family will be based on Verdi's 1884 Italian version in four acts. Don Carlos was originally composed in 1867 in French as a so called ”grand opéra” in five acts with ballet performances. The opera is based on the play on the theme of freedom with the same name, created by Friedrich Von Schiller in 1787.
Former head of Dramaten (Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre) Staffan Valdemar Holm directs; his first production for the Göteborg Opera. The austere stage design reflects the style that has become the hallmark of Danish stage and costumes designer Bente Lykke Møller. Only the costumes of the soloists are in historically authentic renaissance style.
The demanding principal roles are to a large part sung by Göteborg Opera singers: Tomas
Lind sings Don Carlos, Anders Lorentzson sings Philip II, Annalena Persson performs the role of Elisabeth - her first Verdi role ever - and Mats Almgren sings the Grand Inquisitor. Susanne Resmark and Fredrik Zetterström will perform the roles of Eboli and Rodrigo.
