The Flying Dutchman.
Concertante performance of Wagner’s opera at GöteborgsOperan on Friday 21 August at 19.30 and on Sunday 23 August at 18.00
‘The Flying Dutchman’ was the first Wagner opera to be produced at GöteborgsOperan when the opera house was inaugurated fifteen years ago. Now we are celebrating our fifteenth anniversary with a concertante version of the same opera. A Swedish-Norwegian singing team with Terje Stensvold in the lead, GöteborgsOperan’s orchestra, a choir and an extra choir will all converge under the direction of guest conductor, Olaf Henzold. He has previously conducted the successful Strauss productions, ‘Der Rosenkavalier’, ‘Die Frau ohne Schatten’ and ‘Arabella’ at GöteborgsOperan.
Terje Stensvold (The Dutchman) is one of Norway’s foremost opera singers. After 27 years and more than 70 roles as a soloist at Den Norske Opera he embarked on his international career in 1999 and has since then played leading roles at prominent venues such as La Scala in Milano, The Royal Opera House in London and Deutchse Oper in Berlin. The Norwegian Turid Karlsen (Senta) is a well-established dramatic soprano who works all over the world. Her most recent performance at GöteborgsOperan was in the leading role of the box-office success Turandot in 2006. The Steersman is sung by the visiting Per Håkan Precht who was most recently heard at GöteborgsOperan in 2002 when performing the part of Edmond in Manon Lescaut. The parts of Erik, Daland and Mary will be sung by GöteborgsOperan soloists Tomas Lind, Mats Almgren and Marianne Schell respectively.
The Flying Dutchman is one in a series of Wagner operas to be performed at GöteborgsOperan. Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Tristan and Isolde, Valkyria and Parsifal as well as Die Nibelungen in a compact concert format have all been performed during the last fifteen years. During the theatrical year of 2009-2010 we will also be able to invite you to yet another masterpiece by the German opera giant: The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. This opera, which is Wagner’s one and only comic opera, is an exchange with the opera house in Darmstad, with a cast of prominent Swedish soloists. Premiere in April 2010.
Kind regards
GöteborgsOperan
