Some of the world’s best dancers will be gathering in Göteborg during the last weekend of August. In GöteborgsOperan’s Dance Gala Performance we will be able to experience, on one and the same night, masterly classical ballet, trendsetting contemporary dance and the best that Sweden has to offer in street dance. With this specially composed dance evening GöteborgsOperan’s ballet director Johannes Öhman will present the variety and the cutting edge of dance today. Master of ceremonies for the evening is Jonas Gardell.
From the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in New York we have the star soloists David Hallberg, Sarah Lane, Gillian Murphy and Daniil Simkin. They will perform excerpts from the classics Swan Lake and Don Quixote. Kungliga Baletten in Stockholm will be represented by the court dancers Marie Lindqvist and Jan-Erik Wikström who perform a pas-de-deux from The Thieving Magpie. From Holland we have dancers from the legendary dance company Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) with master choreographer Jirí Kylián’s 27’52”. Guest performances will be held by Cullbergbaletten with Johan Inger’s Position of Elsewhere and GöteborgsOperan’s Ballet will be performing a piece that was highly acclaimed by the critics last season, Black Biist by Wim Vandekeybus. The Stockholm based streetdance company Bounce will show us samples from the successful performance ‘One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ and more, while the Gothenburg group Twisted Feet will give us the world premiere performance of the new production ‘Made in China’. The girls’ quartet Phat Jam Jackies promise house, hip-hop and waacking in ‘777 8798-0’. Svenska Balettskolan in Gothenburg will also be participating with 37 pupils from the school years five to nine.
GöteborgsOperan’s Orchestra will be playing this evening’s classical musical features by Tchaikovsky, Rossini and others, under the direction of Alexander Ingram. Ingram was last a guest at GöteborgsOperan in 2008 with the dance performance of Cinderella.
