About dance.

”Dance is a microcosm of events in society and the wider world. Contemporary art will show future generations what values we used to have, what conflicts we used to deal with, and what we dreamed of."

Adolphe Binder

Adolphe Binder commenced her role as the new Ballet Director of the Göteborg Opera on August 1. She is the first female director of the company in 35 years and in addition she is something as unusual as a ballet director without a dancing background. Her contract will run for four years.

Diversity – Curiosity – Authenticity – Innovation – Energy – Experiment – Movement – Fusion of Nordic and international is the common denominator.

About the Göteborg Ballet:

”We aim to surprise, fascinate and be welcoming to all. The Göteborg Ballet is one of the most attractive companies in Europe at the moment. It's a chameleon, a large, diverse company with a broad creative scope that constantly throws itself into new works. The dancers both give and take in combination with a large variety of choreographers, and they look fantastic no matter what they do."

About contemporary Nordic dance:

"There is something specifically Nordic, even if it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is. From a purely aesthetic viewpoint, on stage, the characteristically Nordic element is the unusual purity, the relationship between lights and shadows. There is a very particular Nordic humour and a Nordic heritage. You can break traditions, precisely because you are so aware of them. The Swedish dance scene is very diverse; this country has produced an enormous amount of artistic works for such a small country."

About contemporary dance:

”Dance is a microcosm of events in society and the wider world. Contemporary art will show future generations what values we used to have, what conflicts we used to deal with, and what we dreamed of. Because of this we have to invest in the artistic perspectives of our time. Dance only exists at a given moment, each performance is unique. That experience - the experience of participating in the art itself, becoming a part of it - is something that you won't get by watching Youtube or buying a DVD. The art, the dance, is alive. What happens is beyond the rational, the intellectual, the reachable. Watching dance will move you."

About touring:

"Touring is like breathing. You return full of new impressions while at the same time increasing your knowledge of yourself and what is unique to you. Therefore the Göteborg Ballet intends to continue its successful tours all over the world."
