Answers to frequently asked questions
1. What’s all this about?
We’re looking for people who want to sing and act in the opera The Monster in the Maze!
On 30 May 2018, it will be time for the Scandinavian premiere of Jonathon Dove’s award-winning opera The Monster in the Maze here at the Göteborg Opera. The main roles will be performed by three large amateur choirs: a children’s choir, youth choir and adult choir – about 150 singers in total. The opera also has roles for three professional opera singers. The orchestra will consist of around 25 professional musicians and 25 young musicians.
We will perform 4 times on the Main Stage: 30 & 31 May, then 2 & 3 June 2018. It will be a full-scale opera production with sets, costumes and lighting design – in an auditorium with over 1200 seats!
Now we’re now looking for people who’d like to be in the choirs. No previous experience is necessary!
2. Who can take part?
We are aiming for about 60 people in each choir.
The Göteborg Opera’s current Children’s Choir and Descant Choir will be the foundation for the children’s choir and youth choir in The Monster in the Maze. We will also take on extra children and young people for this particular opera. We are starting the adult choir from scratch. We are looking for:
- Children’s choir: 3 girls & 17 boys, aged 9–12
- Youth choir: 21 young men aged 13–18. (We may take in a few young women aged 13–18, depending on the number of applicants)
- Adult choir: 60 people, aged 19+ (no upper age limit)
3. Why are you looking for more boys than girls?
We hope to have an even balance between males and females in all three choirs. There are more girls than boys in the Göteborg Opera’s existing Children’s Choir and Descant Choir, so we would love to involve more boys.
4. Do I need previous experience? Or particular skills?
No previous experience is necessary. The most important things you need are a real desire to participate, and to sing and act with other people. We will rehearse once or twice per week over a long period, then more intensively in May 2018. It is important that you can take part all the way through!
5. What is expected of me if I get a place in one of the choirs?
We are going to learn and rehearse an opera, both the music and drama, and then perform it in a full-scale production on the Main Stage, in front of large audiences. You will work with a professional team from the Göteborg Opera – including a director, conductor, choreographer, pianists, as well as professional singers, musicians and more. You will learn more about singing, acting and being part of an ensemble on stage. You’ll meet new people. Lots of ”fika”, lots of fun!
6. I am curious, but I don’t know if I want to take part or not...
We have ”taster” workshops especially for people who are curious, would like to meet the team and find out more before deciding whether to sign up for an audition:
- Young people (13–18 years old): 16 September
- Adults (aged 19+): 23 September
See question 13 for more information!
7. What’s the schedule?
See the whole schedule here (PDF file)
8. Is it free to take part?
Yes, and we will provide drinks and/or “fika” on some occasions. Each participant is responsible for their own travel costs to and from the Göteborg Opera.
9. Why don’t I get paid for taking part?
The Monster in the Maze is part of the Göteborg Opera’s Skapa (”Create”) programme, with a focus on participation. Our Skapa projects offer people who are curious about the performing arts different opportunities to gain an insight and be part of the work that we do behind the scenes at the opera house, regardless of background or previous experience. We have the same high ambitions for The Monster in the Maze when it comes to artistic quality as we do for all our productions.
10. Do I need to take part in the whole project?
Yes, you need to be able to attend at least 85% of all rehearsals. If you cannot attend so many rehearsals, we reserve the right to give your place to someone else. When everyone participates, the process and the final performances can be so much better and more fun.
11. What is expected of me at an audition workshop?
The audition workshop is a chance for us to get to know each other through practical exercises, at the same time as having some fun together. You will be part of a workshop in a group, on 1 or 2 days. During the workshop, you can try singing, moving and acting. We will go at a steady pace, so it will be suitable for people with or without previous experience in music theatre. You don’t need to prepare anything. Just wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in.
12. Which artists are involved?
You can see a list of the artists involved in The Monster in the Maze here. Just click on the word "Ensemble" in the grey block under the big picture at the top of the page.

14. Which languages will be used on the project?
The rehearsals will be led in Swedish. The opera will be performed in Swedish. We will be pleased to help with other languages as best we can, based on the language skills among the team. You are very welcome, whichever language(s) you speak.
15. What’s the deadline for signing up to the ”taster” workshops and auditions?
We recommend that you get in touch as soon as possible! (See question 13 for deadlines.) We will prioritise applications so as to achieve an even division between men and women in the choirs (see questions 2 & 3) and from people who can take part in the whole project. If there are places available once we have taken in expressions of interest from people who match our criteria, it is possible that we’ll offer places to other people. If there are no places available, we will create a waiting list.
