New York based New Zealand-born bass-baritone Paul Whelan enjoys a widely varied career, singing both standard and contemporary roles. This season, he appeared as Sarastro Die Zauberflöte at Hawaii Opera Theatre and travelled to the Grand Theatre of Geneva for A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Quince).
Recent successes include Daland Der fliegende Holländer and Nick Shadow The Rake’s Progress at New Zealand Opera, Giorgio I Puritani at Boston Lyric Opera; in the UK Banco Macbeth at Opera North and Titurel Parsifal with the CBSO under Andris Nelsons.
Past successes include Ramfis in Aida at Opera Australia, and Seneca L'Incoronazione di Poppea in both Lille and Dijon. Other notable appearances include Theseus A Midsummer Night's Dream for English National Opera and Collatinus The Rape of Lucretia for Opera Norway. Additionally he appeared at Glyndebourne Festival as Claggart in their new production of Billy Budd, and as Alidoro La Cenerentola. He recently sang his first Wotan in Das Rheingold with the Auckland Philharmonic to critical acclaim; other concert appearances include Beethoven's Mass in C at Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, Jesus in fully staged performances of St. Matthew Passion in Brisbane, and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion for the Leeds International Concert Season.
