Paul Nilon is established as one of Europe’s outstanding lyric tenors in a wide repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Britten. He has worked for most of the major British opera companies. Companies abroad include the Bayerische Staatsoper, Netherlands Opera, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, San Francisco Opera, Boshoi and Dallas Opera. Recent and future operatic engagements include the title role in a new production of Idomeneo for ENO , Chartkov in Weinberg’s The Portrait, Albert Gregor/The Makropulos Case and the title role of La clemenza di Tito for Opera North, Sultan in Vivaldi’s La verità in cimento, Paolo/Maometto II for Garsington Opera, the world premiere of Life is a Dream by Jonathan Dove and Scribe / Khovanschina for Birmingham Opera Company, Bazajet / Tamerlano for the Buxton Festival and Aschenbach / Death in Venice for Garsington Opera. Furthermore Pirro in Rossini’s Ermione, (German premiere) and Paolo in Rossini’s Maometti, both at Volktheater Rostock.
Concert highlights include Bach’s B Minor Mass with the LPO, Handel L’Allegro with Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Beethoven 9 with BBC Philharmonic, the chamber version of Das Lied von der Erde at Wigmore Hall, Mahler Das Lied von der Erde with Bournemouth Symphony and the world premiere of Blackford’s Not in our Time with Bournemouth Symphony Chorus in Bremen. Recent concerts include Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontious and Dvorak’s Stabat mater at Three Choirs Festival.
