Nina Stemme is one of the world’s most sought-after sopranos. In recent years she has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, the Staatsoper in Vienna, the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Royal Opera House in London, and the opera houses in Stockholm, Zürich, Munich, Barcelona, Houston, and San Francisco, in roles such as Isolde, Brünnhilde, Elisabeth, Turandot, Minnie, Tosca, Ariadne, Salome, Elektra, the Marschallin, and Leonore. At the Göteborg Opera Nina Stemme sang in the inaugural concert, and returned to perform the roles of Madama Butterfly (1995), Tosca (1996), the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier (2002), and Arabella (2006).
In 2013 Stemme received the first International Opera Award for best female singer. In 2006 she received the title of Hovsångerska (court singer) in Sweden and in 2012 the title of Kammersängerin in Austria. She has been named singer of the year multiple times by the German magazine Opernwelt. In 2010 she received a Laurence Olivier Award for outstanding achievement in opera, for her performance as Isolde in Christoph Loy’s production of Tristan und Isolde at the Royal Opera in London. She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal by King Carl XVI Gustaf.
Since Stemme’s operatic debut as Chérubin in Cortona, Italy, in 1989, her roles have included Mimi in La Bohème, Manon Lescaut, Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, Euridice in Orfeo ed Euridice, Katarina in Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, Marguerite in Faust, Agathe in Der Freischütz, Marie in Wozzeck, Nyssia in Der König Kandaules, Jenůfa, Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Elsa in Lohengrin, Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, Amelia in Un ballo in maschera, Leonora in La forza del destino, and Aida. She has performed on countless opera stages and at the festivals in Bayreuth, Salzburg, Savonlinna, Glyndebourne, Bregenz, and the Proms in London, to name a few. Her most recent role in Sweden was Turandot at the Dalhalla Opera. Her upcoming engagements include the title roles in Elektra and Turandot at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Elektra and Isolde in Berlin, and Brünnhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen in Washington in the spring of 2016.
