Michael Weinius

Michael Weinius, tenor, is a Hovsångare (court singer) to the Royal Court of Sweden and won first prize at the 2008 International Wagner Competition in Seattle. He has quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after tenors. After transitioning from baritone to tenor in 2004, he made his debut at the NorrlandsOpera as Laca in Jenufa, and has since performed a large number of dramatic tenor roles, including Otello, Peter Grimes, Siegmund, Lohengrin, Parsifal, and Tristan. He has performed on many international stages, including the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, the Nationalopera in Helsingfors, the Norwegian National Opera, and the Opéra Bastille in Paris. Weinius also regularly sings lieder recitals and orchestral concerts, and has worked with conductors such as Kent Nagano, Gustavo Dudamel, Christian Thielemann, Christoph Eschenbach, Donald Runnicles, and Jukka Pekka Saraste. Weinius has received numerous prizes, stipends, and awards, including Svenska Dagbladet’s Opera Prize and Tidskriften Opera’s award. A number of roles have been composed for him, in operas such as Batsheba by Sven David Sandström, Goya by Daniel Börtz, and Vargen kommer by Hans Gefors. Upcoming engagements include, in addition to performances as Siegmund, Lohengrin, Herodes, Parisfal, and Tristan, his debut as Siegfried in Der Ring des Nibelungen in 2018 at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. He was granted the title of Hovsångare in 2013.
