Mats Persson

Mats Persson, baritone, has been a member of the Göteborg Opera’s soloist ensemble since 1992, performing many major dramatic roles from both the Classical/Romantic and contemporary repertoire. These include Mimaroben in Aniara, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Lord Sidney in Il viaggio a Reims, Lindorf/Coppelius/Miracle/Dapertutto in Les contes d'Hoffmann, Wolfram in Tannhäuser, and Orest in Elektra; also Escamillo in Carmen, Banco in Jan Sandström’s Macbeth, Amonasro in Aida, Lescaut in Manon Lescaut, Herr von Faninal in Der Rosenkavalier, Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde, Don Carlo in La forza del destino, Rangoni in Boris Godunov, the title role in K. Beskrivning av en kamp (also broadcast on television), Don Pizarro in Fidelio, Amfortas in Parsifal, the title role in Macbeth, Gunnar in Carl Unander-Scharin’s Sömnkliniken, Godoy in Daniel Börtz’s Goya, the Speaker of the Temple in Die Zauberflöte, Fritz Kothner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Jochanaan in Salome, Don Alfonso in Lucrezia Borgia, and Lorenzo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi.

Persson’s most recent roles have included Paolo Albiani in Simon Boccanegra, Mr. Redburn in Billy Budd, Uberto in La serva padrona, Ruggiero in La Juive, and the title role in Rigoletto – this last an open-air touring production that went up at seven locations on Sweden’s west coast in the spring of 2015. In 1996 Persson performed the title role in Tokfursten at the Vadstena Academy, for which he was awarded a Broocman Prize.
