Mats Almgren

Mats Almgren, bass, has been a soloist with The Göteborg Opera since the 2001/2002 season, where he has most recently played roles such as Claggert in Billy Budd, Don Basilio in The Barber of Seville, Boris Ismailov in Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, First Nazarene in Salome and Count Gremin in Eugene Onegin. His other roles at The Göteborg Opera include The Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlos, Timur in Turandot, Javert in Les Misérables, Ferrando in Il trovatore, Ramfis in Aida, Animal tamer/Athlete in Alban Berg's Lulu, King Marke in Tristan and Isolde, Pimen in Boris Godunov, Hunding in The Valkyrie, Arkel in Pelléas and Mélisande, Padre Guardiano in La forza del destino and Gurnemanz in Parsifal. Mats Almgren has also played the part of Sparafucile in Rigoletto at Den Norske Opera as well as Sarastro in The Magic Flute at Drottningholm Palace Theatre. He has also sung both these roles at The Göteborg Opera.

Internationally, he has sung roles such as Hagen in Götterdämmerung at Scottish Opera with a guest performance at the Edinburgh Festival, Opera North and at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, where he returned to play Rocco in Fidelio and Daland in Der fliegende Holländer. At Opera North, Mats Almgren has also played Fafner in Siegfried. Moreover, he sang Bishop Don Toribio at the first performance of Peter Eötvö's opera Love and Other Demons at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival where he has also sung A Nightwatchman in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
