Mats Almgren, bass has been a soloist at the Göteborg Opera since the 2001/2002 season, and recently sang Boris Ismailov in Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, First Nazarene in Salome, Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin, the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlos, Sarastro in The Magic Flute, and recently Timur in Turandot. His other roles at the Göteborg Opera include Javert in Les Miserables, Ramfis in Aida, Animal Tamer/the Athlete in Alban Berg's Lulu, Arkel in Pelléas and Mélisande, Padre Guardiano in La Forza del Destino, Gurnemanz in Parsifal, and Sparafucile in Rigoletto, which he has also sung at the Norwegian National Opera. At Wermland Opera, he has sung Mathieu in Andrea Chénier, and Sarastro in The Magic Flute at the Drottningholm Palace Theatre. He has played Hagen in Götterdämmerung at Scottish Opera with a guest performance at the Edinburgh Festival, and at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, where he returned to play Rocco in Fidelio and Daland in Der fliegende Holländer. He sang Bishop Don Toribio at the first performance of Peter Eötvö's opera Love and Other Demons at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival where he has also sung A Nightwatchman in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. At Opera North in Leeds, in summer 2013, he sang Fafner in Siegfried.
